America Online has purchased the PlayOnline network from Squaresoft for 1.3 million dollars. AOL will be expected to continue online support for Square's existing and upcoming games, but will most likely expand to include GameCube and X-Box games as well. On the downside, AOL plans to institue a pay-per-play plan in which gamers must pay based on the amount of time they spend on PlayOnline. I have just one thought on this: "Dammit!" It's my opinion that when you make people pay for online gaming, then it's most likely the end of online gaming. But hey, that's just me.
