PC.IGN has a good feature article posted on "The Future of PC Games." They also have a brief quote from Kevin Perry, Director of Game Design at Red Storm and Producer of Covert Ops. Read the whole thing here.

Here's a snippet from the article:
"PCs will always be around as production machines. As a business tool, the PC is unsurpassed. And given that people are lazy, there will always be a market for games you can play on your business machine. At the very least, people will need PCs to write the code for console games. And when they're sick of writing code, maybe they'll want to take a break with a nice LAN game of Team Fortress. PCs cater to a range of very specific tastes. But as Kevin Perry states, "just because it's aimed at a niche market doesn't mean it has to be small-minded." We've already seen that in the way PC games tend to take more chances than their console counterparts."
