Serellan (a.k.a. The Rooster) has come back with detailed info on Black Thorn after visiting E3 as part of the Pie's Tactics delegation. He has now written up THE definitive preview of Black Thorn.

Here's a run-down of some of the important info:
- BT can be played through the Urban Operations mod interface
- The storyline is based on copycat tangos recreating terrorist actions from the past 50 years (not 10 or 30 years as other sites have reported)
- Names of 5 of the 16 maps
- A new multiplayer mode!
- The list of all the new weapons to be included!

(Just an aside: Notice how 5 of the 14 new weapons are made by Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Belgium? Good advertising or what?)

So ... if you read the Rainbow Six novel, you will remember that the team's heavy machine gunner First Sergeant Julio "Oso" Vega's M60 was mentioned in every mission. It's finally showing up as an official weapon in Team RAINBOW's arsenal. Now here's hoping there'll be new operatives added and we'll see Julio Vega in the roster too :-)

Well if you remember well the Rainbow Six novel, you won't have forgotten that, though this damn M60 is noticed in each mission, Julio never use it throughout the book ;o) (and that's, understandably, a source of disappointment for him). Moreover, when he finally takes part to a mission, he uses a MP5 ;o)

Well I could begin a reflexion about the machine guns and their use in Rogue Spear, and having tried those in Urban Ops I don't find them very useful (excepted, of course, when you lag like hell and that you need to unload a 200-bullet magazine to kill a single foe standing in front of you ;o). Covering an assault? They are too unaccurate to be really useful, and you represent an easy target when you stand over the battle field emptying (sorry, does this word exist in English? French-speaker here ;o) your '00-round magazines. But maybe could someone teach me how to use them efficiently?

;o)

Hey Man, thanks for the comments.

Couple things:
1. I think Vega does get to use his M60 right at the end of the novel when they arrive by helicopter to assault the Biodome structure in Brazil. You're right that he doesn't actually use it in any of the earlier CQB scenarios though, cuz the other teammates are too good and take down the tangos within a matter of seconds like they're supposed to. He's mainly there for backup firepower

2. The best way to use the light machine guns in UO is to fire very short controlled bursts to avoid your reticle flaring too much. They are mainly useful if you are actually working as a team. The whole point is that you lay down cover fire while the rest of your team advances.

Ok you're right about the fact that Vega eventually uses his M60.
"He lifted the shoulder stock of his M-60 machine gun and started on the second floor. The weapon traced right to left, shattering glass as the line of tracers darted across the intervening distance into the building."
Well I read it a long time ago ;o)

But I don't see yet the efficiency of it in Rogue Spear (well, I see that you can, at the image of Julio, take a good time shooting at the windows on chalet or nuclear power plant ;o)

I agree it won't be used much in RS. I hardly ever use the Light MG's myself unless playing defend mode. The purpose of and MG is for supressive fire, not CQB, so it may be useful in multiplayer, or in single player larger map with open spaces like Airport or Road.
