Hello, I recently bought rainbow 6 collectors edition. I've tryed to play it but everytime i get to the action phase the screen pauses for a few seconds and then crashes to my desktop. I've tryed everything i can possibly do to fix this problem.

Here's what i've tryed: doanload all of the current patches and install them, buy a new graphics card that IS supported, update the graphics card, i've configured the game many times, tried different resolution settings, tried force software, and refreshed windows.

Doesn't it seem like it would work. Well despite all my efforts to fix my game, it still crashes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ok. First, we need to know all the specs on your machine. What kind of video card does it have (you said you bought a new one?) What operating system? You said 98, is that A or B (second edition)? What soundcard? What version of DirectX are you running? (should be at least 7, and 8 might help, so go get the latest one from microsoft) Is it an intel or an amd processor? Do you have any kind of network connections set up (dialup not included, just network cards (nics))?

If you have the collector's edition, you shouldn't need any patches, it has all the current software. However you should check to make sure you have the latest SUPPORTED drivers (not betas) from your vid and sound card manufacturer.

My next suggestion would be to read the readme.txt file either on the cd or in the game directory. They often list known compatability issues in there that aren't included in the manual, as well as "bugs".

If none of that works, give us the specs on the machine and EXACTLY what happens when it crashes (any error messages, just gets toasted and goes back to desktop, etc.)

Oh, and keep in mind, none of these games support alt-tabing (doh!) so if you have some other program running that can make itself the focus (like aol's im), that would crash things, but I don't think that's your trouble since it only happens when you go to play.

I assume it is an Intel processor, most likely a Celeron because that is what Dell sells in their low end machines.

If you have any questions about how to find what version of DirectX you have, etc., just ask.

Umm... i do need to know where to find which version of Directx :-D, i'm not a computer genious lol... umm.... i don't know why it doesn't work because my brother (who goes to GT) looked at all the requirements for the game and said that i would be able to run it, so my guess is that it has to do with the game being messed up somehow.

When i start the game, the screen flickers and then it just freezes, thats with Rogue Spear, with Rainbow 6 it comes up an error saying that there is an internal error and can't be opened.

I would recommend going to http://www.3dfxgamers.com/view.asp?IOID=2486 and downloading the latest video card drivers for your graphics card. Second, go to http://www.microsoft.com/directx and download directx8. Also, there is a utility that comes with R6/RS called RSconfig.exe I believe. There are options in it to set your video card and sound card. Try playing with those options and choosing the cards you have. Also, download the latest audio drivers for your sound card!

I downloaded Directx8 and installed it. I tryed Rogue Spear, and i was able actually to get into the game, i guess you can call that a plus. But when i got into the mission it crashed about 10 seconds after i started... i don't know why.

Well, I have a Voodoo3 2000 (purple box, pci, whichever that is), and a soundblaster live, running a P-Pro 200 w/128 ram. I've never had a problem running the game. I typically leave the rsconfig stuff set to "Let Rogue Spear choose".

Is it possible that you are low on hard drive space? (I know it's stupid in this day to ask that with 40Gig drives and all, but I'm still using a 2.1 Gig as primary, so :) If it doesn't have enough room for it's swap file, that could cause it to crash.

My only other suggestion at this point would be to do as instructed above, reinstall the game (after uninstalling it) and make sure NOT to reinstall direct x from the cd (since you now have a newer version).

ghost937

(96MB of ram? how... odd. :)

------------------

Oh, and some other things. I don't have it installed right now, so I can't go down the list, but you will probably want to turn mission recording off. There are also other graphic detail settings to play with. I'll probably reinstall tomorrow, so if you're still having trouble, I'll give you my config and you can see if that works for you.

Usually they prompt you if you would like to install Direct X version *whatever*. That shouldn't matter because that version is the lowest version the game works with, so if you accidently install it, it will still work. So...Direct X is not the problem.

What is the exact processor you have?

Did you have sound in the game when it did work?

What is your RSConig.exe set at? It should be "Let Rogue Spear Choose".

Are you sure you correctly installed the latest drivers for you video card? Sometimes the latest drivers don't work in certain games. I had that trouble in August with the latest Det 3 drivers for my Geforce2 GTS. I had to "downgrade" to the last latest driver.

Ok, here's my final round of suggestions. After this, I'd contact tech support if I were you.

Under the RSconfig.exe, make sure both are set to Let Rogue Spear Choose.

In the game, go to options, and do the following:

Under Game, turn off record mission.

Under Graphics, set your res to 640x480 and the detail level to med (though high works on mine).

Under Advanced, turn on LOD and MIP skip, and turn off everything else. Exit RS and then restart it.

Try the simplest training exercise (the shooting alley thing). If it works, try a mission. If THAT works, go back to advanced and turn LOD and MIP skip off and try another mission.

Keep turning options under Advanced back on one at a time until it ceases to work.

If you can't get it to run even with all the graphics options turned off, I dunno what to tell you. "It works just fine on my machine."

I wouldn't give Redstorm a bad review for customer service, at this time of year you would expect it of most companys, a lot of them are on there holidays, hey we waited for UO/CO(Euro) for ages and when we got it there are huge patching issues!! Have you tried the Telephone help number? they maybe able to help you. You could also choose "Hardware acceleration" in the options, worth a try me thinks!

In light of Drunk's post, I just thought I'd point out that hardware acceleration is located in the system properties menu (located by right-clicking on My Computer) and is probably already enabled. If he meant hardware RENDERING (vs. force software), it is the first option in the game options menu, and because of your vid card (a 3dfx) according to the readme, you can't use software rendering.

And there goes my other idea

ghost's graphic setting steps are good. Play around with that some.

When u reinstall RS make sure you delete the old folder so it will remove any old settings, just something to be aware of.

Ok, here's the latest scoop on Rogue Spear... i uninstalled it and then reinstalled it after making sure all the folders were deleted. When i got into the game i was able to go through the 1st mission without any hitches... but in the second mission, as i was walking down the side of the ship the screen flickered then crashed.... this is making me mad, cuz this is the 3-4th time i've uninstalled and reinstalled my games

I got the Rainbow Six collectors edition for X-mas and after installing Rainbow Six, this same thing happened to me after about 30 minutes of playing. It happened another time after that, but hasn't happened afer two missions. Weird, huh! I am running Win98 (not se) with a AMD K6-2 500, Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, and a Ensoniq PCI sound card. I did d/l directx8, but not for sure if it was after this problem or before. Anyway, not having this problem with any other game except this. If I come across anything I will pass it along.

First and foremost, uninstalling the game and then deleting all the folders will *NOT* remove all of the game's settings. In fact probably 90% of the software out there won't be completely removed from the system by using uninstall or deleting the folders. Typically programs dump .dll's and other such files all over the place. And I have never seen a program who's uninstall was smart enough to remove the registry entries *despite* the fact that if you watch the check list, it says it's doing it. the only way to do this is manually edit the registry, which is not something I recommend for someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

As for the colonel's specific problem, if he was able to run one complete mission, I can't help believe that it's not the game or cd or even his computer. More than likely it's a) graphics and options settings in combo with the machine (I keep mentioning this, but it is very significant, TURN OFF RECORD MISSION) or b) the latest and greatest drivers for the card which are NOT supported (ie, beta versions and probably therefore unstable in some situations). If the problem were a specific piece of hardware or software setting, the crashes wouldn't be random (well that's not entirely true, but it's more remote).

Just my humble opinion...

One thing you might want to do is run both scandisk and defrag on your hard drive. It's possible that you have bad sectors on it and every time you install the game, some part of it gets written there (possible, but unlikely).

Then again, who's to say you don't have a machine that is in the exact correct configuration to bring out a new bug in the software. It's gotta be someone

lol ghost...poor colonel

Just confirming: you have tried the suggested graphics settings?

What about borrowing a friends Rogue Spear cd and set it the same way you did yours? You could then decide whether it is your machine or the game.

I have the same problem with the collectors' edition Rogue Spear. random crashes to the desktop, or a BSOD. i have tried using the most basic video settings with recording off, but it still crashes.

i can tell that many of the people who have problems running this game are using the collectors' ed. i know for a fact that this version is different than the original. i wonder if this version may be less stable? does anyone out there the the collectors' ed working? if so, what is your setup, so that i can try to copy it?

the file rommel.log can be used to diagnose problems, just as the sherman.log in the original r6.
here's my rommel.log:

as you can see, i seem to have problems with EAX sounds, but i have no idea what simscene means... just that it is bad.

i have reinstalled (with dir & reg cleanup) several times, and the problem always recurs in 30 minutes or less.

many of the crashes appear just after i choose "resume campaign" - long before the 3d part of the game. this makes me think that the problem is not related to the 3d parts of the game. how can 3d sound and graphics problems cause a crash when they are not yet active? i am thinking more along the lines of general directdraw and directsound compatibility problems with my hardware or software.

i am using directx7 and have not yet tried directx8. i have heard that often causes more problems than it solves. has anyone been abole to fix the game by upgrading 7 to 8?

does anyone have any other recommendations?

most of all, thank you for reading this rather lengthy post.

Well, today i got my orignal copy of Rogue Spear back from a friend (i let him borrow it before christmas holidays) anyways... i tried playing it and i held all teams and i played alone and it didn't crash or falter, or anything.... this is a very odd situation!!!

War Pig5, i just checked out my Rommel.log it has the same things as you but my copy works fine, i think RSE must have changed something on the Collectors edition cds. LT, when you get into the menu is there any different interface or features, try and compare the Standard Retail Version CD, with the Collectors Edition, eg, size of cd, number of files, i got a feeling RSE have changed something on the CE CD and messed something up!
