The MiniDisc (MD) format has reached critical mass in Japan, replacing cassette tape as the recordable medium of choice. Portable MD players have become nearly as small as the MDs themselves, and most boom boxes offer a one-touch CD-ripping feature to facilitate audio piracy. (In Japan, you can rent CDs from stores, and when you do, the clerk will frequently ask, "Would you like any MDs to go with that?")
