Testing
Testing for the DI-701 was actually made very simple thanks to all the kiddies out there that thought it would be cool to try and connect to my computer. I simply shared one of my folders on my drive and assigned read access to it. I then installed a copy of Lockdown 2000 and let it run for a couple days. I was averaging about 10 connect attempts a night. Then I installed the DI-701 and guess what? I haven't had anyone connect to my computer since then. It's like having a bodyguard to protect your computer 24 hrs a day.
Problems
While testing the DI-701, I did run into a snag at first. It seems that the DI-701 was not being assigned and IP address, Subnet Mask, etc., from Road Runner like it was suppose to. I worked with several people including Michael Scott, Brad Bester and Bradley Morse, and we discovered that the problem was that the Surfboard SB3100 cable modem that I have was caching the MAC address of my NIC card which I had it connected to and was not allowing it to work with the DI-701. To remedy this problem, I had to disconnect the power from the cable modem for 24 hrs., then connect up the DI-701, and plug back in the cable modem. It then re-cached the address of the DI-701 and worked properly.
Conclusion
As cable becomes more and more widely available, the need to protect your computer becomes more and more apparent. Unlike with Dial-Up access, the risk of unwanted users connecting to your computer is much greater with broadband access. D-Link DI-701 is a great product to help combat this threat. At a price of around $99, the DI-701 is an inexpensive route to take to protect your computer from unwanted threats. The ability to route incoming traffic is a great feature as well.
Overall, the DI-701 is a simple to use and setup product for pretty much everyone. It provides the basic features needed to allow even the most inexperienced user to protect his computer.
