I found out today that @home cable is available in my area now. I also found out that Ameritech DSL will be available in 1 1/2 to two months. Well, my question is should I get @home cable now or wait two months for Ameritech DSL? Any opinions would be appreaciated. IP: Logged |

here is the thing, @home's cable is at 3Mbps Download and 128Kbps upload... (Mega Bits and Kilo Bits, not bytes) which means its roughly 300KB and 12.8KB DSL can be faster, it can also be more expensive... so you should make the decision, do u want more upload? or mainly download... --VAXC3 IP: Logged |

Also important is the logistics of Cable. It (at least in Canada) works on a shared network (one reason why they limit transmission speeds), meaning you can be weighed down if there are lots of active users in your hub. DSL is a direct connection and not shared with anyone else. In Vancouver Cable and ADSL are the same price though you can purchase a higher speed version of ADSL if you want even more bandwidth. Many cable providers off a theoretical transfer rate of 30 mega bits per second. However the more people hooked up in your neighboordhood who are online will slow this down. In Fresno, CA i've seen my friends work usually around 600 KILOBYTES (or 4.8 mega bits) download, and about 300K (2.4 mega bits) up. That's twice that of a T1, and this is typical in *THAT* area at *THIS* particular time, your's WILL differ, as will his when more people sign up. DSL is more usually offered in packages, from 128kilobits up and down up to 6megabits (depends how much you wanna pay) guaranteed. Nobody but you get's any action on the bandwidth. But the main thing is, if you dont have DSL available now, and your phone companies plans to have it available in 1 1/2 months, take it with a grain of salt. They wont, it'll be 6 months to a year. Get cable and be happy. BEsides cable adapted will probably come out quick with the Playstation2 then a DSL one..heh IP: Logged |
