System: PIII 450, CL RivaTNT1 AGP, CL PCI512 Soundcard, 64 Megs of Ram, Intel PCI10/100 NIC, Asus P2B Motherboard. Win98 First Edition.

I spent HOURS playing single player, before and after multiplayer crashes.

When it crashes, which is ONLY during multiplayer, the system freezes, and a high pitch squeal emits from my speakers. Whether I'm hosting, or playing on www.zone.com, its ALWAYS the same, there has not been a single multiplayer session that has not crashed, and always with this piercing squeal. And at random times, ranging from 30 seconds, to 5 minutes.

I have 4 machines hooked to the net in my house, all of them different, and mine is the only one it crashes on.

Has this been heard of before? What about multiplayer makes it crash?!

UPDATE:
Ok, so I've heard a little from Red Storm, they wanted my MSInfo file... So I sent it, and not heard back from them. By the way, that was asked for within 48 hours of my post to them.

So, on my own I've done the following (None of which has solved my problem)

1) Changed the sound card from the PCI512 to the SB32; this got rid of the squeal, but not the crash. I'm now using the PCI512 again

2) Changed the network card from the Intel PCI Pro/100+ to the SMC ISA 10mb card; No difference. I'm back using the Intel NIC

3) Set my memory speed in advanced properties in Blaster Control from 110 mhz to 80 mhz; On the first run, this seemed to put off the crash for awhile, but after that, the crash was nearly immediate.

4) Changed from the drivers that shipped with my video card, to the latest drivers from Creative, to the NVidia Detonator drivers; None of these seemed to make a difference at all. Currently back using the Detonators.

4a) I've also added a fan to the video card heat sync, it doesn't come with one, and now the heat sync is always luke warm to the touch, whereas before it was HOT; this doesn't seem to have made a difference either.

A COMMENT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO USE THIS BOARD:
This is about the the least responsive community I've seen. I'm part of 3 other online communities, and they are incredibly more responsive, and quicker at it too. I've noticed posts made in JANUARY on this ubb, and they seem to be valid pleas for help, and still don't have responses.

I'd like you, you who is in charge, or active here to take a look at a few other UBB's from the flight sim communities of Warbirds, Aces High, and World War II Online. World War II Online has not even LAUNCHED their game yet, and the community is already more active than this by a thousand-fold.

One reason this site is so popular is because they are combining ground combat of troops and tanks and vehicles in with fighters and bombers, ships and submarines, everything, a TOTAL virtual battlefield - the first of its kind!)

Take a look at how many posts per day there are on each of these sites, check out the online help sections and see how quickly things are answered.

I don't mean to compare apples to oranges here, but it seems that other communites are more active in helping their people get connected and have fun. And I certainly don't wish this to seem like a flame on anyone here.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide me about solving my problem of online play.

Don't judge the RS community just by the people who post on the Retreat's forums. Even though we are one of the most popular RS/R6 fan sites, our forum community is pretty small and/or non-existant. If you want to experience the RS forum community, visit the official RSE forums.

As far as your problems, I am not sure exactly what is up. I am going to start with the basics: Do you have the 2.05 patch installed? Do you have the latest DirectX (7.1a?) installed? Do you have the latest video card and sound card drivers? What are you doing in multiplayer to lock it up? Have you looked in your rommel.log file yet in your Rogue Spear root directory? Have you tried playing multiplayer using something other than the zone such as the RS Toolkit and does it still lockup?

Hi Snicker...

I have tried the latest drivers, from both Nvidia, and Creative Labs for the video card. And have also used the latest sound card drivers. Latest DirectX 7.1a is installed, Also downloaded the latest DirectMedia and Media Patch.

I am running the 2.05 patch, for the record, it crashes under either situation.

As to what I am doing when the crash happens, it happens at random times, some I am shooting, some I am just standing there scanning the area, some I am running, walking, squating, squating and running, ...basically, any time during the game, regardless of what I am doing, it will crash.

rommel.log is blank, and file size is Zero. (what is this supposed to do?)

The crashes happen regardless if I am using zone, playing on my local area network. Sometimes, if I go into the multiplayer section, choose create game, and just sit there and wait a few minutes the squeal crash will happen, and no one has even joined my host. Keep in mind that I can play single player for HOURS AT A TIME, WITHOUT a crash. It happens as both host and client mode.

I'm at a loss, and have exhausted all attempts EXCEPT changing the video card. When I get back from my vacation, I will start saving for my GeForce card.

And I apologize for my assumption about your community, but from the quality of your site, and the look and feel, and its popularity, I assumed it was the biggest and best.

Well, since you can play single player without any problem, it should be safe to rule out any video or sound card problems.

I would focus your attention on either your network interface card or perhaps your Windows networking setup.

To eliminate the net card as the culprit, remove it from your system, uninstall the drivers, and try putting a modem in and playing some multiplayer that way.

Also, make sure your Windows networking setup is similar to the other machines on your LAN. You may want to try going to the Microsoft site to download any updates that have to do with networking.

I appreciate the help Commander,

As an update, which I did on the other boards, but forgot this one, I have changed my video card to the Asus V6600 GeForce 256.

This solved the propblem.

I changed the sound card, and the network card, and the problems still existed, so there were only two components left, the video card, and the motherboard. The sound and network card I had lying around, but couldn't change the others without spending money, so I finally did that, and the problem is resolved.

Thanks for the help guys!
