About:

For a GPS unit I was looking for something that was relatively inexpensive, small, and would provide me with accurate readings. About:

Looking for a good LCD solution was a challenge for me, I actually went through several different LCD’s until I finally found one that worked and looked good. I started out by purchasing one of the generic 5” LCD’s off of Ebay. It connected to the Epia-M via the RCA video out port. However, when I first connected it up to the Epia-M motherboard I found the graphics to of very poor quality. Even after messing around with the color scheme and enlarging the text and graphics it was almost impossible to view any static images, especially when it came to viewing the navigation software.

Next, I decided to purchase a name brand solution, because I thought since the generic LCD did not support very many pixels and was cheaply built that was why the graphics were bad. I decided to go with the Kenwood LZ-700W mobile LCD w/ built in TV-Tuner. To my surprise however, the graphics were still not spectacular even with this LCD. Don't get me wrong, it was definitely better than the generic LCD, however, everything was still fuzzy and attempting to read the navigation software was almost impossible. After this second attempt I finally concluded that the RCA/Composite video out on the Epia-M just wasn’t going to cut it. I needed to find a better solution that would connect to the computer via the VGA out so that I could have support for higher refresh rates and resolutions.

Fortunately, I ran across a company by the name of Xenarc. They manufacture LCDs that specifically support mobile computing solutions. I decided on the 700TSV model which is a 7” LCD that features not only VGA Input, but also 2 RCA video inputs. Best of all it features touch screen support, which will be great for an in-car environment. It features support for PAL and NTSC, built-in speaker, and supports up to 1280x1024 resolution.

Features and Specs:

  • 4-wire resistive Touch Screen
  • On Screen Display Control
  • For PC, Server, GPS, and various VGA Use

  • 16x9 Aspect Ratio
  • Auto power-on upon signal detection
  • Automatic display adjustment
  • Now supports 11V DC ~ 24V DC
  • Physical Resolution: 800 (H) x 480 (V)
  • Supported Resolution: 640 x 480 ~ 1280 x 1024
  • Dot Resolution: 2400 x 480 = 1,152,000 (dots)
