About:

In order to implement a wireless connection between the CarPC and my house, I needed a good wireless solution. For this I contacted D-Link, and they were kind enough to provide me with everything I needed. The DI-614+ is one of the key components. It acts as the router between the wireless network, the Ethernet LAN clients and my RoadRunner broadband connection. This will allow me to establish a wireless connection from the car to the computers in the house to access data as well as to access the Internet.

The product features security, including rule-based firewall protection as well as domain blocking, IP blocking, MAC address blocking, and URL blocking. For wireless security it features 64, 128, and 256bit WEP in both ASCII and HEX keys. Also supported are IPSEC, LLTP, and PPTP, great for those wanting to setup a VPN.

Features and Specs:

  • Standards: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.3
  • VPN Pass Through/Multi-Sessions: PPTP, L2TP, IPSec
  • Advanced Firewall Features: MAC Filtering, IP Filtering, URL Filtering, Domain Blocking
  • Web-Based Configuration and Management
  • Wireless Data Rates with automatic fallback
  • Data Rates Supported: 22Mbps, 11Mbps, 5.5Mbps, 2Mbps, 1Mbps
  • Encryption: 64/128/256-bit RC4
  • Media Access Controla: CSMA/CA with ACK
  • Wireless Frequency Range: 2.4GHz to 2.462GHz
  • Wireless Operating Range: Indoors: Up to 328 feet (100 meters). Outdoors: Up to 1,312 feet (400 meters)
  • Wireless Modulation Technology: PBCC - Packet Binary Convolutional Coding, Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS), 11-chip Barker sequence
  • Modulation Techniques: Barker (1Mbps/0db), Barker (2Mbps/3db), CCK (5.5Mbps/5.5db), PBCC (5.5 Mbps/1.5db), CCK (11Mbps/8.5db), PBCC (11Mbps/4.5db), PBCC (22Mbps/8.5db)
  • Wireless Transmit Power: 15dBm ± 2dB
  • External Antenna Type: Dual detachable reverse SMA
  • LEDs: Power, WAN, Local Network—10/100, WLAN (Wireless Connection)
  • Operating Temperature: 32°F to 131°F ( 0°C to 55°C)
  • Humidity 95% maximum (non -condensing)
  • Power Input External Power Supply DC 5V, 2.4A
  • Dimensions: L = 9.25 inches (233mm), W = 6.5 inches (165mm), H = 1.375 inches (35mm)
  • Weight ~2.0 lbs (907g)
  • Warranty 3 Year

(Added February 16, 2004 ) After continuing to experience numerous problems with this router over a period of time, including lockups and very poor wireless signal, I have decided to decommission it. I currently have it replaced with a Linksys WRV54G.

About:

The DWL-900AP+ is another key component in establishing wireless connectivity to the car. In order to establish a connection between the car and DI-614+, the signal has to go through several thick walls that diminish the signal. This is where the DWL-900AP+ comes in. Once setup, I can install the access point in the garage and have a cleaner signal and get better transfer rates. In order to initially set it up the DWL-900AP+ needs to be connected to a LAN, but after that it can be taken off and installed anywhere there is a power outlet, as long as the distance between it and the original access point is not to great. The DWL-900AP+ features WEP protection, as well as MAC address filtering, for keeping unwanted users of your network.

Features and Specs:

  • Standards: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.3
  • Port: 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet
  • Web-Based Configuration and Management

(Added February 16, 2004 ) Since, I decommissioned the DI-614+ this device can no longer be utilized. I am hoping the WRV54G with its Wireless-G capabilities will provide a strong enough signal for my needs, effectively making this product unneeded. I will post when I have tested more.
